Roving Reporter Janelle Van Der Westhuizen 22/11/10

Welcome to Room 13's daily update

Today has been a difficult day in our town with the eyes of the world watching us. We are praying for the Men to come home safely and also for their families.

This morning Miss P showed us a new website to help us with our spelling. We found some of the games difficult because the instructions weren't there and some of the parts moved very fast... We will get better!!!

We had an audition to see who would be in the lead parts for our xmas concert. Lots of people wanted to audition but only some will get the parts. Fingers crossed for Room 13!!!

This afternoon we completed another science experiment with Room 14. It was called Lava Lamp. This is the experiment.

Method:
1. Half fill a jar with water and food colour mixture
2. Gently and slowly pour oil on top of the water. It should settle on top.
3. Gently drop the aspirin in the mixture.
4. After floating through the oil it should hit the water and begin to bubble.

The result was something that looked like a lava lamp. The oil mixture was moving like a wave.
We will try again tomorrow and see what happens if we puit a second aspirin in the jar.

Over and out Janelle

Roving Reporter Sammi Smith 19/11/10

This is Today's roving reporter, Sammi Smith - Live from Room 13.

In ICT today we have been creating graphs from our homework. We printed them off and we are going to display them up on the wall.We had to do a graph on how many different colour/models of cars that went past in a hour but we were allowed to only do half an hour and we just had to double it.

In writing today we have been descriptive writing. We are writing a fantasy story were we write about a normal character who touches, falls, disappears etc into a fantasy world. Then we introduced the setting in the fantasy world and finally we write about the normal character meeting the fantasy character.

Come back for examples of our stories...

Nuestro nuevo idioma

Thank goodness for Google translate... Our new language is Spanish!

In Term 3 we started learning Spanish. First we watched videos that showed us a lot about Spanish that really made us think!

Then we made signs with the English saying and underneath the Spanish saying. Here are some of the signs we made.
Hello Hola.
Buenos dias good morning.
Hasta mañana see you in the morning.
Adiós bye.
Hasta luego see you later.
Buenos noches good night.

After that our nice teacher Miss Panther gave us a sheet of paper that had lots and lots of words on it it had the English saying then the Spanish saying. Once we had pretty much memorised the important words room 13 had to make a play using just Spanish words. It was harder than we thought and we kept on pausing, trying to find the exact right word {or words) for what we wanted to say.

We are still learning but we are definitely getting better..

Commonwealth Games

The Commonwealth Games was an excellent experience. With things such as Run to India, Mini Commonwealth Games(at school) and the topic/homework based on Blooms Taxonomy.

NOW for the run to India - our whole syndicate had to run on a track of 500m and in only 10 mins. The best runners struggled to get around it 4-5 times and the bad people on the course - 1 or maybe even two if lucky.

This next activity everyone in the big school had to do was the mini Commonwealth Games and it involved high jump, hurdles, ping pong, shot put, netball, rugby sevens, archery, hockey and weightlifting.

Then for the lucky last thing blooms taxonomy homework... Miss Panther gave us a sheet with heaps of activities on it. They were all related to the Commonwealth Games or Commonwealth countries. We could choose which activities we wanted to do as long as we made 30 points before the holidays. Most of us made the 30 points.

Term 3 Ski Trip

Term 3 was a really busy term in Room 13.

Ski Trip
We went to Porters Pass for our ski trip. It took us ages to get there on the bus. When we got there the beginners went onto the beginners ski field and the intermediate went on the intermediate slope. Every one learnt how to ski! Some of us even went on the intermediate slope but fell over on the way down. Then we went on it to more times.

The only bad thing that happened in the slopes was that a girl in Room 14 called Olivia went sliding into a fence and was helicoptered to Christchurch with Miss Panther. It turned out that she was o.k. On the way back we stopped in Arthurs pass to get some refreshments for the trip back to Greymouth. We got back one hour early because it was starting to get cold up at Porters so some of us had to wait for one hour in the rain for our parents to arrive

Can't wait till next year...

Week 6 Term 2

Book week was VERY COOL!!!

Mrs Costello created a quiz called "Who am I?" The teachers had a photo of their favorite books and posted them on the windows around the school. We had to guess who each book belonged to. Then we did a treasure hunt of favourite books to get prizes for the class.

On Wednesday it was wacky hair day and the best hair won a prize of lolly pops.

On Thursday there was joke day. There were some really good jokes and like Wednesday there was prizes for the best joke in the school.

The best bit was "Dress up your door". Room 13 chose Narnia as our door theme. We had a snow scene, fir trees, a wardrobe and fur coats. The judges, like us, thought our door was wicked and we got second!!!!

Yay for book week!!!!

Blaire, Tineka and Janelle begin the updates for Week 2

In class we are learning to write persuasive arguments including Staying Sun Safe, The Importance of Sports and Are Dogs Better Pets than Cats?

The Year 7's have been attending technology at the High School over the year and this term we changed into another class. Tineka and Blaire went into plastics and Janelle went into wood work which Tineka and Blaire were in last term. We have made bridges and put weights on them as a test of strength. It was a competition and most of them broke.

On Friday we had mufti day to raise money for the SPCA's new building.

Ciao

Week 9 - it's Easter...

Have a fabulous holiday everyone! Be safe, be good and be helpful at home!

Astronauts landed in Week 8!

Week 8 was an interesting week as two of the teachers become astronauts for a day. Why? To kick off our space topic for Term 2! Watch this space is looking to be a very interesting and intriguing topic and we have already created our own planets, calculated our age on Mars and learnt how to hide from aliens...

End of Week 1!! We made it!

Well Room 13, we made it to the end of Week 1! So far this week, we have made a mess creating a collage showing one of our school values - RESPECT! You have begun decorating your bio poem with more collage cutouts = more mess... Most of you easily bet me to the lookout point (that won't last forever...) and we have sorted out our house groups!

I'm looking forward to Term 1 for all the camps, swimming, sport, sunshine and learning we have ahead of us.

Happy Waitangi Day!
